Uncovering the mystery of why colored gemstones are expensive!

What gem does not lose value

Beauty is the primary condition that determines the value of colored gemstones. The main factors that measure whether colored gemstones are beautiful include color, luster, transparency, clarity, optical effect, cutting process, etc. When these factors are just right, colored gemstones will exude dazzling brilliance and are naturally valuable.

In the early 1980s, it was first discovered in Paraiba State, Brazil. In order to commemorate the place of origin, people named this colored gemstone “Paraiba Tourmaline”. Its stunning neon appearance instantly captured people’s hearts. In just six days, its value soared to US$2,500 per carat. It was called the king of tourmalines and the Hermes of tourmalines.

Rare things are valuable. There are only about 230 minerals in nature that can be used as raw materials for colored gemstones. In the international jewelry market, there are only more than 20 high-end  gemstones, less than 10%. Excellent quality ones are even rarer. With the closure or reduction of mines around the world, the prices of rare gemstones continue to rise, and market competition intensifies.

When the gap between the supply and demand of colored gemstones is large, the tight supply and demand will cause the value of colored gemstones to soar. This usually happens when:

3. Due to unexpected events, the number of  gemstones circulating in the market drops sharply. For example, the war in Myanmar has caused a surge in the prices of Burmese rubies and Burmese jade.

4. Changes in the direction of aesthetic trends will also cause a surge in the value of related  gemstones. For example, the Chinese style of dressing has triggered a buying boom for jadeite and Hetian jade.

5. The star and celebrity effect will inevitably drive a large number of consumers to generate demand. For example, some female stars have recently frequently worn pearls, which has triggered a buying boom for pearl necklaces among ordinary people.
